Students at Igbinedion Education Centre in Benin City have been expelled following a widely circulated video showing the brutal assault of a fellow student on the school premises.
The incident came to public attention after a disturbing video surfaced online, showing two students physically attacking a classmate inside what appeared to be a classroom. In the footage, the victim was repeatedly flogged, kicked, and dragged on the floor while another student recorded the scene. At one point, a voice in the background could be heard pleading with the attackers to stop, but the assault continued.
The video quickly spread across social media, triggering widespread outrage among parents, education advocates, and members of the public, many of whom called for immediate action from both the school authorities and law enforcement agencies.
In response, the management of Igbinedion Education Centre condemned the incident, describing the behaviour as deeply disturbing and contrary to the values and discipline standards of the institution. Following an internal investigation, the school announced that the students involved in the attack had been expelled, reaffirming its zero-tolerance policy toward bullying, intimidation, harassment, and violence.
Meanwhile, the Edo State Police Command has called on the victim and his parents to come forward to formally report the incident. Police authorities indicated that acts of physical bullying that result in injury may constitute a criminal offence and could warrant further investigation.
The incident has reignited discussions about bullying in Nigerian schools and the need for stronger safeguarding systems to protect students. Education advocates have urged schools to implement clearer anti-bullying policies, provide safe reporting channels for victims, and ensure that disciplinary measures are consistently enforced.
As conversations around student safety continue, many parents and stakeholders say the incident highlights the importance of creating school environments where students feel protected and where violence among peers is addressed swiftly and decisively.
