Teachers and pupils at LEA Primary School, Makanima, reportedly continue learning and teaching under unsafe conditions.

The school, located opposite the military barracks in the Giri area of Abuja and near the permanent site of the University of Abuja, is said to be grappling with deteriorating classrooms and damaged roofing structures, exposing pupils to harsh weather conditions.

According to civic technology organisation MonITNG, the school remains neglected, with exposed classrooms leaving children vulnerable during rainfall, heat, and storms. Images from the school reportedly reveal severely damaged roofs and unsafe learning spaces.

The development has raised renewed concerns over the implementation of school rehabilitation projects in the FCT, particularly following the approval of ₦30.9 billion by FCT Minister Nyesom Wike for the renovation of public schools across Abuja. The government had indicated that dozens of schools would be rehabilitated within specified timelines.

However, months after the announcement, LEA Primary School Makanima is reportedly yet to benefit from any intervention despite its location in a strategic area of the capital.

Observers have described the situation as inconsistent with official claims regarding completed or ongoing school renovation projects across the FCT. Calls have also been made for Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the FCT in the Senate, to demand transparency and accountability concerning the rehabilitation programme, including details of contractors involved and reasons for delays affecting schools such as Makanima.

Civil society groups argue that the situation points to broader concerns surrounding governance, project oversight, and budget implementation. They stress that investments in education should produce measurable improvements in school infrastructure, warning that continued neglect threatens both pupil safety and the quality of education in the nation’s capital.
